Valentine’s Day: Too Cliche?
Is Valentine’s Day too cliche? Do you hate all of the lovey-dovey stuff? Or do you love the teddy bears and chocolate? The romantic date nights?
Valentine’s Day is a nationwide holiday that many people spend with their significant other or even with their friends if they don’t have someone close to share it with. Many people will go all out and usually give each other big chocolates, life-sized teddy bears, jewelry, or flowers.
Some people despise holidays like this, maybe because they don’t have anyone to spend it with, or anyone to spoil. It is hard when people live alone and don’t have a significant other, especially when Valentine’s Day comes rolling around and see it all over the stores. Maybe you could go out with your friends, and do something fun like go-karting, but if you don’t have much money, maybe stay in and watch a movie.
Those that do have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, you can do some not cheesy things like watch a movie or cook them dinner instead of going out. Buying a dozen roses might please them, but that also leaves you broke and out of money until the next paycheck. Making something homemade might also be nice. Hey, it's the thought that counts, right?
Mayah Lopez claimed “Some people do spend way too much money, but if they have somebody, then no because they could spend it on each other. But if they don't have someone then it’s too much money they'll spend.”
Some stores bring their Valentine's merchandise out as early as the day after New Year’s. They'll put it on sale to try and get customers to buy it. They'll also put it on sale after Valentine's Day on clearance.
“When I see the Valentine’s Day stuff in the stores, it makes me think how lonely I am and how they make a big deal and I don’t have a boyfriend to love,” said Lauren Dillard; Anya Wallace adds, “Ulgh, it makes me feel like the world is a sad place.”
In South Korea they celebrate Valentine’s Day and is celebrated from February through April. The gift-giving starts on February 14, and the girls give their boyfriend chocolates, candies and flowers. On March 14 (White Day), it turns around and the guys do the same to their girlfriends but expect a big gift. The third holiday, (celebrated on April 14), is called Black Day and is when people who are single mourn by not being in a relationship by eating dark bowls of jajangmyeon or black-bean paste noodles.
