A phenomenon strikes seniors in their second semester, as they come back from winter break, senioritis. Senioritis is characterized by a decline in motivation or performance. Symptoms include laziness, and over excessive wearing of sweatpants and sweatshirts. In addition, there is a lack of studying, repeated tardiness or absences, and a general dismissive attitude. The only cure is graduation.
Senioritis is affecting “second-semester” seniors. In the short term the choice to slack studies and attendance can impact transitioning for high-school to college. In the long term, there are negative effects that could change your future. Senioritis can easily affect seniors’ final transcript.
According to the research by the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, a majority of colleges that accept applicants are rejected admission because of final grades. Colleges expect seniors to continue to maintain their academics and success that was demonstrated in the application.
“I definitely feel like I’m in a slump now that’s making me really want to check out of school especially since I got into my number one college; it kinda just feels like this is a boring phase until we graduate,” said senior Matthew Brown.
After thirteen years of school, the end is almost in sight. It’s time to relax and celebrate. Seniors feel that they deserve a break from all the work they put forth. College-bound students are overwhelmed with applications, scholarship applications, essays, and financial aid.
On top of this it is a burden, in addition, balancing extracurricular activities, social life, and work. Failing classes and not producing enough credits during the senior year could be a huge setback to graduation.
“Senioritis is real, and it’s like you will always joke around, but when it hits you it hits you hard,” said senior Jarquita Harris.
“ Senioritis is really something. I’ve had it since freshman year,” said senior varsity cheerleader Farrah Yarbrough.
Seniors have been accepted to college and are tempted to think to think it is time to slack off a bit now that you submitted your enrollment and your fate is sealed. Colleges are still watching you. Colleges require a final transcript. Everything you do still counts.
For those who are experiencing senioritis, there is still hope. There are many ways to cope including getting involved in extracurricular activities, thinking about the endpoint, and future plans. Seniors are almost finished and need to remain motivated. Take time to favor your last months of highschool and enjoy family and friends.
