Born this way?

Many people believe that nature and nurture both play complex roles in determining sexuality. Most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation.

“I do believe you are born with your sexual orientation because I feel like always in the back of your mind you know what you like. For example , you’re not gonna randomly be like , ‘Oh I’m gay now’ , like no one can make or force you to go into that sexuality. You’re born with that in the back of your mind , it’s just if you chose to show it / express it,” said sophomore Denaisha Penman, when asked if she believes if you are born with your sexual orientation or sexuality.

Many think that the whole reason someone can find and identify with a certain sexuality is society. Society shapes and effects so much we do in today’s world.

”Depends on if you let society and the things people think and say get to you. You’re only influenced if you let it happen. Some people do fall into peer pressure and think they have to be a certain way to fit in with others. It’s sad but it’s true reality.” said sophomore Natalie Loney.

Most see it as you’re born the way you are. No one can tell someone who you can or are suppose to like. It’s ultimately the person’s life, and they can do whatever they please.

“I believe you are who you are from the jump. There’s definitely a huge effect from the people around you though. You are what you hang around,” stated Sophomore Egypt Barbee.

The reality is that no scientific evidence has established a genetic cause for homosexuality or found a 'gay gene.' There is no DNA or medical test to determine if a person is homosexual. This still leads to people questioning and wondering if there’s been enough research.

“Gay is a self-chosen identity,” said Sophomore Brandon Stroyier .

In an article by Behavioral Neuroscience, a study was shown that it turns out that when males and females are exposed to a loud noise, they blink in somewhat different ways except, that lesbians appear to blink like men, not like women.

“You’re born just the way you are,” says Egypt Barbee.

The study is suggesting that sexual preferences may be not simply a matter of personal preference but part of our ingrained biology.
