What is our actual purpose of standardized testing? Research says that standardized testing is a fair way to show student achievements. But how do the students feel about this? “I think it’s pressuring and stressful.” said Joanna Galvan. Standardized testing doesn’t show kids full potential. Some kids don’t try and won’t put in their full effort. That shouldn’t determine their next step in life. “When people are pressured about the test they forget things and don’t perform their best,” said Selena Esquivel a former student. Which is why Selena thinks standardized testing isn’t the way to go to determine so much of someone’s life. Antonio Esquivel as well agrees with Selena.

“Some people don’t even try on the psat, and sometimes I don’t,” said Antonio. “Standardized testing shows what they expect you to know every single person can’t remember the same exact thing. It’s like they want every person to think the same,” said Selena. It seems so unfair to Selena when they give her things from 4 years ago, and some can remember how to do it and others can’t remember. Joanna feels like she did alright on her previous standardized test she felt she could’ve done better but there were questions she didn’t understand. “I felt like there was questions that I did know, but there were more questions I didn’t understand.” Said Joanna. What should they actually do to determine what class to put you in? Is there even a better option? Also will it be more accurate? Selena thinks she knows a better option. “I think students’ overall performance is the best way. They should get an overview of that student like did they go to class every day? Did they ditch? Did they really work hard on assignments? Those things factor into a good student that,” said Selena. She feels based on those kind of things they will actually do well in an honors class. It would be pointless to have a student that got lucky on a standardized test get put into an honors when they are just lazy and won’t do any of the work. Those kind of students will just fail the class from laziness. If you really thought about it if they looked at how hard students worked rather than what they did on 1 test more kids would be in honors and the school overall would look good with so many kids in High classes. According to The Princeton Review approximately 3.5 million students take the psat each year. What do you think it would be if the standardized testing stopped and teacher started to look at the overall student?
