The stars of Friday nights, the kings and queens of the court, and the dominators of the field. High school student athletes are glamorized all over the world from small towns in the nooks and crannies of America to the big screens in Hollywood. But how far will athletes go to keep their scholarships, their strength, and their spot on the team? It isn’t uncommon in every sports story for many different variety of drugs to come up as a topic of conversation. From steroids to pain killers to marijuana, many different drugs have been found in the system of student athletes at both college and high school levels. While most schools drug test their athletes, Crete Monee trusts their athletes to stay on the straight and narrow but most are starting to raise an eyebrow at it. “We all have to sign of form at the beginning of the season that if we had to be drug tested, we could be but we never have been.” Said Sandy Gonzalez, a varsity soccer player positioned at left midfield. Daniel Higgins, a tennis, bowling, and track coach believes that not many student athletes actually participate in taking any enhancement drugs and feels it’s a form of cheating. He does admit that many schools and coaches put “huge emphasis on athletic scholarships instead of academic scholarships.” While not many admit to hearing of or taking steroids, some do say that other drugs may be a source of an issue in schools everywhere, but all admit that a random drug tests somewhere around or during the sports' respective season would work. The biggest concern for most schools is money, drug tests do cost money so maybe that’s why most haven’t taken a drug test despite playing for three or four years straight. “I think it cost to much to keep doing it, I think that’s what stops most schools. But maybe once, maybe a random would work.” Higgins suggested. To a shock to most outside the state, lots of New Jersey high schools drug test their athletes all year round and not just during their sport seasons. Gonzalez says it’s unnecessary. “I think only one test would be enough. If you’re gonna drug test a sport you might as well do all of them so it’s fair.” Male dominated sports, like football, was the biggest sport to be drug tested all over America. Football is also the most praised sport and has the most attention not only at Crete Monee, but all over the United States with the movies, books, and tv shows surrounding the stars of the Friday nights. While Crete Monee’s football team has never had any controversy, is it still a question on whether or not student athletes need to be drug test? Many say no, most

say yes. Not all student athletes need that extra push, some just have a natural born talent for their passion.
