9,000 students from eight high schools in three states improved grades and standardized test scores from delaying the school day. Antonio Esquivel wakes up at 6:00 am every morning for school. He goes to sleep at 2:00 am. That's 5 hours of sleep he gets.He missed the bus twice this school year already. “I don't get home until 6 because of soccer practice, after practice i have to do chores and do my homework.” Said Antonio Esquivel. Students normally don't go to sleep early because they have a life they have other things they need to do such as a sport, things they need to do at home. Also their old enough to having a job at this point. I would imagine it's difficult for teens that have a job and have to come home to homework and don't get the full 8 hours of sleep they need. “If kids got more sleep they wouldn't sleep in class and they would have way more energy in the day and would be more willing to work.” said Antonio Esquivel. Students aren't their best when they haven't gotten their full 8 hours of sleep. It's not healthy if you've only gotten 5 hours of sleep. It's scientifically proven students perform better when they sleep more. Nicolas Guerrero goes to sleep normally around 10:30 -11:30. He wakes up at 5:00 am for the school bus. Nicolas only gets about 6 or 7 hours of sleep. Which neither is good enough. A High school student needs at least a full 8 hours of sleep. “My bus comes at 6:05am every morning”. Said Nicolas Guerrero The sun hasn't even set yet at 6 am. It's still dark out meaning our brains still feel like it's bedtime. No, it's time to get up and get going to school already. “If kids get more sleep they would be more awake, both mentally and physically because they get maybe an hour or so more of sleep.” said Nicolas Guerrero. It's a really big improvement if kids aren't sleeping in class and is actually focused. It makes the school look better if their student aren't sleeping in class and is improving in their class work. Also on the really big tests they will get good enough sleep if school were to delay. “The student would complain a lot less, they would do more school work because they are focused instead of sleeping in class”. Said Nicolas Guerrero Antonio Esquivel and Nicolas Guerrero seem to believe that more sleep is for the better to represent the high school. What do you think is more important? More sleep and better students? Or get out an hour later?
